disciple by donning a kippah and
becoming an observant Jew. In
1991 he entered the spotlight after
attacking Knesset member Tamar
Gozanzky of the Democratic Front
for Peace and Equality during a
Kach demonstration in Tel Aviv.
The following year he was expelled
from Tel Aviv University for racist
incitement against the Druze stu-
dent who had been elected to the
student council.
Mr. Raviv enrolled at Bar-Ilan
University, where he continued
his political agitation. In 1992, he
also turned the tiny Eyal move-
ment (an acronym for Jewish
Fighting Organization) into a ver-
sion of the youth wing of Kach.
Eyal attracted few members but
a disproportionate amount of me-
dia attention, especially after Mr.
Raviv moved to Kiryat Arba (fol-
lowing the massacre perpetrated
by Baruch Goldstein) and began
issuing threats against both Arabs
and "moderate" settlers.
After the leaks about Mr. Ra-
viv's ties with the Shabak, lead-
ing members of Kach in Kiryat
Arba and Hebron were quick to
reveal that they had always sus-
pected him as a Shabak agent —
because of his "timely" move to
Kiryat Arba, his inexplicably
well-funded operation, and the
consistently swift arrival of the
army to halt local actions in
which he was involved. The sur-
vivor of a brief marriage and an
abortive attempt to establish a
settlement in Samaria, Mr. Ra-
viv even failed at being a con-
vincing fanatic in the eyes of the
masters in that line.
So what can be concluded
about Avishai Raviv — other
than that as a zealot he failed to
build a following, and as a secret
agent he failed to save Yitzhak
Rabin's life? Was he just a polit-
ical opportunist? Or was he a full-
fledged agent whose job was not
just to penetrate the far right, but
to lead it to disaster?
Only the Shamgar Commis-
sion investigating the murder has
a chance of learning the answer
— if; indeed, it asks the question
— and even then we have little
reason to believe it will share
what it learns with the public.
The best we can do is rely on
the assessments of seasoned and
cautious observers with no polit-
ical ax, like veteran Shabak
watcher Ze'ev Schiff, the defense
editor of Ha'aretz. "Avishai Ra-
viv was an informer over whom
[the Shabak's] control was only
partial, or perhaps 'flimsy' is a
better word," he said.
Of course, such determinations
by mere journalists will not end
the speculation and debate.
After all, these questions are
far more intriguing than seeing
whether one immature, mis-
guided, and ultimately incompe-
tent young man can be turned
into a scapegoat for the sins of the
right and the security services
combined. ❑
