mark the inauguration of and
turning points in the children's
studies with special celebrations,
refreshments and gifts. Even be-
fore a child begins school, how-
ever, parents can plant and
nurture the love of learning
through books at home.

Simply reading to your child
15 minutes a day is "one of the
greatest intellectual (and emo-
tional) gifts you can give a child,"
says Jim Trelease, author of The
New Read-Aloud Handbook.
`The single most important ac-
tivity for building the knowledge
required for eventual success in
reading is reading aloud to chil-
dren ... a practice that should con-
tinue throughout the grades,"
said the Commission on Reading
of the National Academy of Edu-
cation and the National Institute
of Education in its 1985 report,
"Becoming a Nation of Readers."
Personal experience and tech-
nology, in the form of the tele-
vision, VCR and computer, are
other teachers of children. But
literature offers unique ben-
efits, allowing time to savor,
reflect and interact, point out

Reading aloud to
children, say these
educators, helps
children make sense
of their world, stimu-
lates their curiosity
and imagination, and
promotes growth in
the vital communica-
tion skills of listen-
ing, speaking,
reading and writ-
ing.
It's never too early to
read to your child. Child de-
velopment experts recommend
beginning in infancy, thus mak-
ing reading part of your regular
routine.
The ideal arrangement for
reading aloud is one-to-one. If
your parents read you bedtime
stories, you need only close your
eyes to relive the feelings of calm,
safety and intimacy experienced
in those magic moments — and
recreate them for your own chil-
dren. Read to each of your chil-
dren separately, if possible,
recommends Harvard psycholo-
gist Jerome Kagan, choosing age-
appropriate material. Minimize
interruptions (let the answering
machine take phone calls, for ex-
ample) and teach siblings to re-
