West of Haggerty AND SONS 624-0400 35 years with VOLVO. Out 2nd year on Maple Road American Jewish opinion about the peace process generally and the Golan and the PLO specifi- cally. He seems unaware that public opinion polls (including one by the American Jewish Committee) have shown over- whehning sentiment in both the United States and Israel against U.S. troops on the Golan and also both great skepticism by American Jews about PLO ac- tivities and intentions and clear opposition to American financial support for the PLO. The ZOA, while leaning to the right of center, is a broad orga- nization that is more tolerant of diversity of opinion than Mr. Ze- chory appears to be. For exam- ple, although my politics are left of center, I have been a vice pres- ident of the Metro Detroit ZOA and chair of its public affairs committee for the past decade. Mr. Zechory, there is no need for your ruling viewpoints in the American Jewish community out of court as "despicable," "ven- omous," and "deranged" and then associating people with whom you disagree with Baruch Goldstein and Yigal Amir. Yours is a 1990s McCarthyism as in- tolerant, erroneous and out of place in a free society as Sen. Joe McCarthy's was in the 1950s. Before Yitzhak Rabin (reluc- tantly) shook Yassir Arafat's hand on the White House lawn in September 1993, he said that it was time to end the bloodshed between Arab and Israeli. Mr. Zechory, there is the need to end your "blood-letting" against fel- low Jews, all the more when you have your facts wrong. Leon H. Warshay Vice President, ZOA Metro Detroit District Don't Overstate The Case Mark Bernstein's Community Views column in the Nov. 24 is- sue, "Finding Success in Ju- daism's New Competitive Advantage," argued that Hillel offers Jewish students activities not available in secular univer- sity organizations. I might find this "plug" of Hillel convincing except that I know for a fact that at least one example he gives of Hillel's competitive advantage is simply not true. He should have done his homework before making such bold assertions as the following: "If a student wants to sing with Ann Arbor's only student singing group to have released its own CD, he has no choice but to sing with Hillel's Kol Ha Kavod..." My daughter recorded the CD Out of Control with the Har- monettes, a female a cappella group at the University of Michi- gan. There are two other Jewish students besides my daughter in the group. Amaizin' Blue, an- other a cappella group at the university which has made CDs, has at least one Jewish student. My daughter knows because that student was on her UAHC- NFIY trip to Israel last summer. I would be surprised if the Fri- ars or the Michigan Men's Glee Club, which have also made CDs, did not have Jewish stu- dents. I support the worth of Hillel in providing Jewish identity for students at Michigan and else- where, but don't overstate your case. Maida Waldner Royal Oak A Unique Place In Detroit Kudos on David Zeman's Nov. 24 piece about Congregation T'chiyah's one-room school. It is a unique place for the reasons he reported, as well as for being the only Reconstructionist religious school in town and being inside the city of Detroit. I would like to add to Mr. Ze- man's report that our school is open to the children of non- members as well as members. Anyone interested in learning more about the school or the syn- agogue, which holds services once a month at the Agency for Jewish Education in Southfield, may call me at 810-545-6826.
