The producers created a na- tional point-of-purchase display campaign that promoted the show with the proactive line, "Stomp does for rhythm what Freud does for sex." The red and black counter-top posters were strategically placed at health clubs, music clubs, comedy clubs and restaurants and bars. All seven performances sold out a week before the show hit town. City after city of sold-out Stomp shows hasn't gone unno- ticed. "There is a real hunger for this kind of entertainment, which is unclassifiable and to a degree cutting edge," says Routh. Blue Man Group, a body-paint- ed performance ensemble that, among other things, taps on tubes and premiered off-Broadway be- fore Stomp, recently opened an additional troupe in Boston. And two other shows, Tap Dogs, which also debuted at the Edin- burgh Festival, and Jam on the Groove„ an off-Broadway hip hop piece, are hoping to ride the weave of Stomp's success. Nevertheless, Routh says, "there's something innately won- derful about Stomp.
