Islamic Militants
Are Arrested

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israeli sol-
diers have arrested 16 Islamic ex-
tremists in villages near the West

Bank town ofJenin.
The crackdown on members of
the militant Hamas and Islam-
ic Jihad movements took place at
the end of the 40-day mourning
period for Dr. Fathi Shakaki, the
leader of Islamic Jihad who was
slain Oct. 26 in Malta.
The arrests came amid
stepped-up Israeli security mea-
sures to prevent tenor attacks by
militant Islamic groups in retal-
iation for Dr. Shakaki's killing.
Islamic Jihad officials have
maintained that agents of the
Mossad, Israel's intelligence ser-
vice, were responsible for the
shooting of Dr. Shakaki.
Israeli officials refused to con-
firm or deny their involvement.
Israel officially handed over
control of Jenin to the Palestini-
ans on Nov. 13. The arrests took
place in villages still under the
overall control of Israeli forces.

Jerusalem (JTA) — Reacting to
a newspaper report exposing
what it claimed were lax securi-
ty measures on El Al planes,
Prime Minister Shimon Peres
lashed out at the media for en-
dangering national security.
Mr. Peres' remarks came in
the wake of a report in an edition
of the Israeli daily Ma'ariv in
which a reporter put a dummy
bomb in a suitcase, checked it and
then did not board the flight.
The plane flew to its European
destination with the suitcase
aboard.
In his comments during a
weekly Cabinet meeting — the
first since the Knesset approved
his new government — Mr.
Peres called the event scan-
dalous, adding that newspapers
would print anything to boost
sales,
He also questioned why the
government censor had allowed
the article to be published.
Meanwhile, in response to the
Ma'ariv report, El Al officials said
that security checks would be
tightened and that no flights
would take off with luggage
whose owner was not aboard.
At the same time, an El Al of-
ficial quoted by the Israeli daily
Ha'aretz attempted to deflect the
criticism aimed at the national
carrier, saying that the Port Au-
thority was responsible for secu-
rity on the ground at Ben-Guri-
on Airport.
"Explosive devices could have
been planted on any plane tak-
ing off from Ben-Gurion, and not
just El Al," he said.
