Foltin, legislative director for the American Jewish Committee "There are real problems with il- legal immigration that need to be addressed, although we disagree with the approach Congress seems to be taking. This bill, ad- dressing legal immigration, sends the inappropriate message that legal immigrants are part of the problem — which is simply not true." ... ...... .. ...... King Sued by Nation of Islam Last week, Rep. Peter King, R- N.Y., reacted with pleasure to news that a controversial contract between the Baltimore Housing Authority and a security firm as- sociated with Minister Louis Far- rakhan's Nation of Islam (NOI) was being canceled by the De- partment of Housing and Urban Development. King had been the most outspoken congressional critic of the contracts and of HUD secretary Henry Cisneros. Late last week, the legislator was named in a NOI lawsuit against the federal government. The action, filed in Federal Dis- trict Court in Baltimore, alleges King was part of a conspiracy with B'nai B'rith, the Anti- Defamation League and the American Jewish Congress — groups that had pressed hard for an investigation into the hiring practices of the NOI firms and the question of whether the se- curity guards were using their positions in some of the city's worst public housing projects to seek converts. "I am proud of the role I played along with the other groups men- tioned in the NOI lawsuit," Mr. King said. "We have a right and a duty to petition the federal gov- ernment to address our Gradison with its policies. Americans call it democracy; paranoids and racists call it conspiracy." ❑ Publicity Deadlines The normal deadline for local news and publicity items is noon Thursday, eight days prior to issue date.
