• Avoid sudden, strenuous
exertion. Begin your shoveling
gradually.

large, heavy loads.

Juice Abuse:
Squeezing By

Fruit juice is big business. Ac-
cording to the Consumer Re-
ports on Health newsletter,
consumers spent nearly $20 bil-
lion on fruit juice products in
1994, and more than 475 new
products turned up on grocers'
shelves.
Juice can be part of a healthy
diet as long as you choose your
elixir carefully and don't fill up
on juice in place of fresh fruits
and vegetables. Americans rely
on fruit juice for nearly one-
third of their vitamin C. But the
CR editors note that even the
best juice can't compete with
whole fruit when it comes to
fiber. Even fiber-fortified juices
can't provide the fiber of the real
thing.
When selecting juice, be sure
to read the label to see how
much fruit juice the drink actu-
ally contains. Some beverages
are lucky to squeeze in 3 per-
cent. But bear in mind that
some juices, such as cranberry
or apricot nectar, must be di-
luted or they'd be unpalatable,
and even in their diluted state,
they still pack a vitamin punch.
Also beware of what CR calls
"juice fillers"—apple, pear and
white grape juice, all of which
"are practically devoid of nutri-
ents."
Parents should be especially
careful about letting their chil-
dren guzzle too much juice. CR
notes that it's easy for toddlers
to fill up on juice and not get
enough of other foods that are
richer in calories and nutrients.
Too much fluid also can lead to
diarrhea, and the sugar content
of juice can lead to tooth decay.
Still, juice can have valuable
medicinal qualities for grown-
ups. A daily half cup of prune
juice really can prevent or treat
constipation (though three or
four prunes also does the trick).
And cranberry-juice cocktail can
help stave off a urinary-tract in-
fection. Just drink at least a half
cup per day at the first sign of
infection. E
