Jerusalem, served as a designer
at Pewabic. Two years ago, she
began her current role oversee-
ing the educational outreach pro-
grams.
"Working with clay is an en-
gaging experience," she said. "It
has a lot of different aspects that
can work with a multidiscipli-
nary education."
As public funding for arts ed-
ucation continues to decrease,
said Shiftan, Pewabic has in-
creased its workshops for art
teachers and the community.
The educational outreach pro-
grams are conducted for all age
groups. When possible, the
workshops are organized to co-
incide with a guest artist's show.
"That way, there's a collabora-
tion and students have more con-
tact with the work," said Shiftan,
who first came in contact with
functional pottery as a child in
Israel.
Teaching, along with her ex-
perience in clay production and
glaze techniques, has given Shif-
tan a new perspective on her in-
dividual artistic work as a
sculptress. "I like teaching and
the vitality of the workplace," she
said. "It's not my dream to be iso-
lated in the woods, working in a
studio."
Shiftan continues to explore
the possibilities of her post-min-
imalist sculpture style. Her
shows at Pewabic, Habatat and
the Detroit Focus galleries have
displayed an abstractionist's
playfulness with geometric
forms and reflect her education-
al background in philosophy and
epistemological dilemmas. "My
work (as a sculptress) is intend-
ed to try to get the (viewer) to
make sense of the sculpture and
then realize that the meaning is
based on the present context,"
she said.
Shiftan's work is currently on
display in the Riedelbach Design
Center at Pewabic during the
Gifts of Clay Holiday Show.
Until her next exhibit, Shiftan
intends to further assimilate her
experiences as teacher and de-
signer. "There's so much to learn
here at Pewabic about design,
color, pattern and utility," she
said. ❑
