neo-Nazism. They should be fu-
rious at Marcia Clark for em-
bracing Mr. Fuhrman after she
was told of his racism, sexism
and neo-Nazism. Ms. Clark told
the jury that she had become a
prosecutor in order to have the
luxury of never having to put on
a witness who was not telling the
truth. Well, she did just that. She
had to know that Mr. Fuhrman
was lying when he denied using
the "n" word. So did dozens of
other prosecutors, policemen and
friends of Mr. Fuhrman, who all
sat silently by and allowed the
lie to go uncorrected until the
tapes were discovered.
I am particularly concerned by
the criticism directed against Mr.
Cochran's remarks by Abraham
Foxman, the head of the Anti-
Defamation League, which has
itself called Louis Farrakhan a
"black Hitler," which teaches that
no one should ignore or minimize
any manifestation of neo-Nazi
racism and which urges blacks,
Jews and others to work togeth-
er in the condemnation of racism
and anti-Semitism. For Mr. Fox-
man to criticize Mr. Cochran be-
cause he took the preaching of
the ADL seriously is to apply a
double standard to Jews and
blacks as to their obligation to re-
member the lesson of the Holo-
caust: that evil begins small and
that silence in the face of evil is
complicity.
I am personally gratified that
a pro-Israeli African American,
who has visited Yad Vashem
twice, saw fit to tell a largely
black jury that Hitler was among
"the worst people in the history
of the world," especially at a time
when too many blacks and oth-
ers are disputing that reality. Yet
Mr. Cochran has received more
criticism from some Jews than
have those rabbis who have ex-
plicitly compared Prime Minis-
ter Rabin to Hitler. For shame!
And for shame on those who
have written to me using the "n"
word in characterizing Mr.
Cochran.
There is one decision that Mr.
Cochran made of which I was
critical. After receiving a faxed
death threat in the courtroom,
Mr. Cochran asked a friend, who
was an investigator for the dis-
trict attorney's office, to arrange
for his security. The friend
arranged for guards who were
members of the Nation of Islam.
When I learned of this, I imme-
diately called Mr. Cochran and
expressed my views. He assured
me that he would arrange for oth-
er security, and he has done so.
It is imperative that Jews who
are angry at the verdict in the
Simpson case not misdirect their
anger at the closing argument
made by Johnnie Cochran, in
which he expressed views that
many Jews share: namely, that
racism and anti-Semitism are
twin evils that, left unchallenged,
can turn into genocide. ❑
