Chanukah Event
On Zionism

Rabbi Efry Spectre of Adat
Shalom Synagogue will discuss
"TheBirth of Zionism" at a lun-
cheon sponsored by the congre-
gation's seniors group,
CHaZaKaH.
The program, CHaZaKaH's
annual birthday/Chanukah cel-
ebration, is set for 12:30 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 14.
Following a latke lunch, the
CHaZaKah board will light can-
dles signifying the sixth birthday
of the group.
Rabbi Spectre will talk about
the first World General Zionist
Conference in Basle, Switzer-
land, in 1931. His program wil
be accompanied by slides of Basle
and Zurich from a recent trip.
The program is open to all
community seniors. There is $3
change for CHaZaKaH members
and a $4 fee for non-members.
Reservations are required by
Dec. 7.

er Fund Concert will be held 2
p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, at the Jim-
my Prentis Morris Jewish Com-
munity Center. It will feature the
JCC singing trio of Rivka Latin-
skaya, Ida Kogan and Larissa
Matusova, accompanied by Regi-
na Papeyants. There is no
charge.
"Jewish Humor: Laughing
Through Our Tears" will be pre-
sented 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at
JPM by Rabbi Arnie Sleutelberg
of Congregation Shir Tikvah.
A Sinai Hospital dietician will
present low-fat Chanukah
recipes 6 -7 p.m. Thursday, Dec.
7. There is a charge.
Blue Cross/Blue Shield will
sponsor a program on substance
abuse 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7.
The JPM Senior Adult Choir
meets Mondays, at 12:30 p.m. to
sing traditional Jewish folk
songs, old favorites and current
tunes. Musically inclined singers
are welcome.
The JPM Center Men's Forum
meets Thursdays 10:30 a.m. -

Phil Marcus Esser will be per-
forming at Temple Kol Ami Sis-
terhoods' annual fundraiser on
Saturday, Dec. 9 at 8 p.m. at the
temple.

The evening, entitled "Voice of
the Raven Coffee House," will
end with an afterglow following
the concert.
For the last 22 year, Mr. Ess-
er has performed, produced and
written hundreds of songs. He
will performs favorites from
Jacques Brel, Cole Porter, Steven
Sondheim and others.

Youth Award

Essay Contest

The League of Jewish Women's
Organizations has applications
available for its 51st annual
youth awards for high school stu-
dents. The ceremony will be held
on Sunday, April 28, at Temple
Israel.
To qualify for the annual
youth award of $500, the appli-
cant must be a high school senior
with at least a 3.0 grade point av-
erage, have a formal Jewish ed-
ucation, be actively involved in
the community and submit a
one-page typed essay on the sub-
ject: As future leaders of our
country, discuss the separation
of church and state as it pertains
to the issue of prayer in the
school. As you write your re-
sponse, take the perspective from
both an American and a Jewish
point of view. Once qualified, an
applicant will be interviewed by
a panel of judges.
The application and essay
must be received no later than
