HOLIDAY SEASON SPECIALS ! FROM APPLE VACATIONS *IAMAiCA FROM $229= They are presumed drowned in the rough, icy waters of San Francisco Bay. There were never women pris- oners on the Rock, nor women guards. The only females on the island were the wives and chil- dren of the correctional officers. The cell house was never filled to its capacity of 333 cells. The average number of prisoners at one time was 260, and the max- imum was 302. There was one guard for each five prisoners. No food or beverages are sold to tourists who visit Alcatraz. Al- cohol is strictly prohibited, and so is smoking. Bring a sweater, even in the summer. It is quite cool inside the building. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes; you will do a lot of walking, and some of it is on rough terrain. In addition to the recorded tour, there is a free 12-minute slide show on the history of Al- catraz. There are also free, ranger-led walks; and the rangers will answer questions about famous inmates, the Na- tive American occupation of the Rock and anything else you want to know. Thousands of people visit Al- catraz every month. It is a good idea to get tickets in advance. For information, call (415) 546-2805. A tour of Alcatraz is not a fun trip, but is very worthwhile. You will experience the sights, sounds and smells of a specific society that is hopefully foreign to you, but intriguing, nevertheless. ❑ •Airlines • Hotels • Tours •Cruises AIR * ARUbA FROM $2990NLY $599 * CANCUN STAR FROM HOTEL ONE WEEK I NCL 5 * pUERT0Ai - 5 - ‘1 ..
