HEARING LOSS
IS NOT A LIFE SENTENCE.

Congress Ducks
Militia Issue

The recent House hearings
into the militia movement at-
tracted scant interest in the me-
dia. That was exactly what
House leaders wanted, according
to some Congressional sources.
The Capitol Hill session fea-
tured several experts from acad-
emia who suggested that the
militias, which combine an ul-
traconservative, anti-government
and pro-gun ideology with dos-
es of racism and anti-Semitism,
would grow as the year 2000 ap-
proaches and prophetic theories
about the end of the world pro-
liferate.
A spokesman for the Simon
Wiesenthal Center described how
the Internet and other online ser-
vices are contributing to the
growth of these groups. The Anti-
Defamation League testified in
favor of new laws that would out-
law paramilitary training and
give federal authorities additional
powers to confront domestic ter-
ror — the subject of legislation
being pushed by Rep. Jerrold
Nadler, D-N.Y.
Rep. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.,
who has been hounding his Re-
publican colleagues for months
to hold hearings, labeled the
groups "a sickness of hate, para-
noia and violence."
Several law enforcement au-
thorities described confrontations
with militia members and inci-
dents of harassment.
Mr. Schumer also blasted the
Republican leadership for its con-
tinuing "stonewalling" of the om-
nibus anti-terrorism bill, which
Passed the Senate earlier this
year — but which has been held
up by conservative Republicans
who are worried about expand-
ing the powers of the federal gov-
ernment.
But the hearing was weighted
heavily in favor of academic ex-
perts, not victims of militia ha-
rassment or government officials
who have faced threats of vio-
lence by the far-right extremists.
"There was a deliberate effort
to make this as boring a hearing
as possible," said a legislative
staffer who worked on the hear-
ing. "The Republicans did not
want to step on too many toes, so
they made this as low-key and as
unnewsworthy as they could."
Congress spent almost two
weeks investigating the Branch
Davidian tragedy at Waco, and
almost two months looking into
federal actions at Ruby Ridge,
Idaho involving white suprema-
cist Randy Weaver, this source
noted. The militia hearings were
over in a day.

In a profession where understanding
every word is crucial, your image with
clients and associates is critical to
their trust and confidence.
