eople tend to congregate in
the lobby of the Maple-
Drake Jewish Communi-
ty Center after a workout
or a visit to the art gallery, so why
not give them one more reason to
stay?
Coffee, espresso and cappucci-
no are the preferred potables for
socializing nowadays, so a cafe
seemed a "perfect fit," said JCC
Operations Director Chris Lewis.
After a search for the ultimate
cup ofjoe and the kind of busi-
nesspeople who could rise to the
challenge of serving a particular
population, the JCC approached
the owners of Bravo! at 12 Mile
and Evergreen roads in South-
field.
Owner Harry Barash and his
brother, Layth, agreed to a casu-
al alliance with the West Bloom-
field center, and on Sunday, Nov.
12, started brewing and steam-
ing at a stand in the lobby.
"It's a minimal investment and
it's a very, very good opportuni-
ty. It could end up being a very
profitable venture for the both of
us," said Harry Barash.
Bravo! agreed to a three-
month trial period at the JCC, af-
ter which a "real contract" would
be negotiated, he said.
"They have the option of bid-
ding it out to somebody else.
There's no contract, no lease writ-
ten on paper," he added.
"We want' to make sure it

works for him," said Ms. Lewis.
"Already, I know it works for us.
We were packed (the first day of
business). We heard wonderful
reports. We're offering our mem-
bers a wonderful convenience, a
place they can have coffee, bagels
and pastries after they work out.
I want him to be successful and
I want us to be able to offer this
to our membership. It's not cost-
ing the JCC anything at this
point."
The JCC serves food in its cafe-
teria, but Bravo! won't compete
with it, Ms. Lewis continued.
"They're offering bagels, pas-
tries, gourmet coffees, flavored
teas — a totally different menu,"
she said.
Should the coffee stand con-
tinue to draw the same kind of
response as it did its first day —
and Mr. Barash acknowledged
that Book Fair brought in more
people than usual — Bravo! could
become another business that
rents space at the JCC, Ms.
Lewis said.
Right now, Bravo! in the JCC
is fully portable — there's no
plumbing or major hardware. Be-
sides the usual coffee drinks and
bagels, it serves danish, muffins
and scones. Mr. Barash said he
has been assured that the baked
goods, which come from Marty's
Cookies and Elwin's, are kosher,
but they are not registered
kosher.

"As things progress, and we're
hoping they do, then we'll expand
with seating and hopefully a raw
juice bar, and who knows from
there?" said Harry Barash.
Layth Barash will run the
stand for the time being. In the
future, Harry Barash said, Bra-
vo! will most likely hire staff from
the JCC.

High-Tech Park
Set For China

Jerusalem — Industry and
Trade Minister Micha Harish
and Chinese Minister of Foreign
Trade and Economic Cooperation
Wu Yi announced plans for es-
tablishing a joint high-technolo-
gy industrial park in China.
At a Jerusalem news confer-
ence, Yi said the industrial park
would be located in Tianjin,
which is close to Beijing — ap-
proximately "the same distance
as between Jerusalem and Tel
Aviv."
She noted that the choice was
made due to the city's strong in-
