norities and "a far greater tol-
erance for intolerance."
To further discussion, the es-
timated 200-plus students at-
tending the fair watched a trio
of "sociodramas" about Jewish
\_ campus life by the Jewish En-
semble Theater.
In its first two years, the col-
lege fair had been held in April.
The event was switched to the
fall so high-school seniors could
ask questions of recruiters at a
time when they are making
their college choices. 111

Lawmakers Back
Shoah Education

tate law does not require
middle schools and high
schools to teach students
about the Holocaust. But
a recently passed state Senate
resolution recommends teachers
include Holocaust education in
their curricula.
The resolution, introduced by
West Bloomfield Sen. David
Honigman, says, "Educational
programs that do not include
special attention to the Holocaust
deprive our young people of an
opportunity to gain insights into
events of the past that must nev-
er be forgotten."
It further urges the state su-
perintendent of schools to help
local school boards incorporate
/--'
Holocaust education by prepar-
ing or making instructional ma-
terial available.
Cindy Hughey, the director of
the Lansing-based Michigan
Jewish Conference, said the res-
olution allows organizations like
the Holocaust Education Coali-
tion, a volunteer outreach
group, and those involved with
the Holocaust curriculum Life
Unworthy of Life, to further pro-
mote Holocaust education in
schools.
Betty Rothberg Elias, vice
chair of the Holocaust Education
Coalition, added, "Having the
state of Michigan involved in this
part of the education process will
encourage the teaching of the
Holocaust. It will also help
tremendously if the state super-
intendent encourages schools to
use Life Unworthy of Life. Any
time we can get encouragement
from the State Board of Educa-
tion, the House or the Senate,
it helps."
A Holocaust curriculum is cur-
rently mandated in a handful of
states including Florida, Cali-
fornia and New Jersey. And at
least a dozen other states have
passed resolutions or formally
recognized the need to teach pub-
lic school students about the
j
Holocaust, according to Dr. Mar-
ilyn Gans Schelberg of the Holo-
caust Education Coalition. ❑
