F

4 leven years ago, he

,

clutched a Grammy
Award for Best New Artist
of 1983 and thanked
America for "knowing a good drag
queen when you see one."
But the attention wasn't to be
long-lived. After two hit, early '80s
albums with his band Culture Club,
Boy George — outspoken, flam-
boyant and unapologetically an-
drogynous — was undermined by
a barrage of drug addiction, legal
problems and bad music (Anyone
remember 'The War Song"?).
But he's a determined "gal," this
Boy, and the former George O'Dowd
worked his way back to the top of
the charts in 1993 with his rendi-
tion of "The Crying Game." This
year, he's released his strongest solo
album yet, Cheapness and Beauty,
as well as a deliciously chatty tell-
all autobiography, Boy Man.
"I don't blame anybody for what
happened to me — now," he says.
"In the past I saw myself very much
as a martyr and a victim, very
much put-upon. As the years have
gone by, I realized my own part in
that. We all choose our roles, our
situations; whether we choose to
learn from them is the essential
thing."
Boy George will be happy to show
what he's learned at 7 p.m. on Sat-
urday, Nov. 25, at the State The-
atre, 2115 Woodward (next to the
Fox Theatre), Detroit. Eve Gal-
lagher appears with George. Tick-
ets are $18 general admission. All
ages. Call (313) 961-5450 anytime.
