was seven days after his De-
cember 1994 graduation from
Michigan State University
and Jeff Sklar, a journalism
major, was already starting to get
acclimated to big-city life.
Last January, the Farmington
Hills native went to New York for
a paid internship at Financial
World magazine.
Driven by the desire to make
a name for himself in the pub-
lishing world and prepared with
the foresight that an internship
wouldn't pay the rent in New
York, Mr. Sklar, now 22, spent
two months with Financial
World and quickly found his pre-
sent position as a communica-
tions assistant with Hachette
Filipacchi Magazines. The com-
pany publishes 27 magazines in-
cluding ELLE, Family Life and
Road & Track. It also publishes
George, John F. Kennedy Jr.'s
new political magazine.
Mr. Sklar, a symbol of what

persistence and drive can help
one achieve, is proud of his ac-
complishments and is passionate
about his new job.
Publicity and marketing are
integral to his day-to-day re-
sponsibilities. Some of his job re-
sponsibilities include suggesting
segment topics to network shows.
For example, he will call "Good
Morning America" and suggest
a topic that corresponds with ei-
ther one of the company's current
magazine articles or an editor's
field of expertise.
If Mr. Sklar is successful, the
show's producers will agree to the
suggested topic and feature an
"expert" from a Hachette Fili-
pacchi magazine.
"The job touches a lot of bases
because the company is growing
so fast," he said.
Lately, the thrust of his work

Best part about living `in
New York: "I walk out'of my of-
fice and in front of me is the the-
ater where Cats is playing. I see
the Sony Jumbo-Tron screen, the
neon, glow of signs and people
walking, and I think to'myself: No
one got me here but myself, and all
this is at my disposal."
Worst part about New York:
"It's very dirty, the summers are
hot and the rent is high. The very
worst part is far from my fam-
ily."

has been with the hot new po-
litical magazine George. He
helped organize the magazine's
kick-off event in September and
arranged interviews for JFK
Jr. and others involved with the
magazine.
"When I left Michigan,
there was a buzz about
George, but I didn't know how
to go about getting there," he
said. "One year later, and
here I am. After a series of
peaks and valleys, I've land-
ed in a good spot with a lot of
room to grow."
Through his work with
George, Mr. Sklar knows Mr.
Kennedy, but only on a pro-
fessional basis. "He is a nice
guy," Mr. Sklar said. "I see
him a few times a week."
