one political leaders of this sec-
tor — composed of the veteran
National Religious Party (NRP),
the politically moderate Meimad
movement, and the activist
Yesha Council — were the first
to meet for a round of collective,
public soul-searching.
They were sharply divided on
the question of whether and
where they had gone wrong.
Some of the speakers at the gath-
ering were, above all, defensive.
Zevulun Hammer of the NRP, for
example, warned his listeners
against taking upon themselves
sins they had not committed, and
Yisrael Harel of the Yesha Coun-
cil categorically dissociated his
constituents from those settlers
who had cheered the prime min-
ister's demise, characterizing the
latter not just as "noxious weeds"
in the garden of religious Zion-
ism but "as different from the
people gathered here as creatures
from another planet." Mr. Harel's
explanation for the rise, yet
again, of a violently anti-democ-
ratic trend among religious na-
tionalists was that "our education
against all compromise affects
people of a certainly personality
in a negative way."
And taking a far more defini-
tive stand, Rabbi Menachem Fe-
lix, a founder of the Gush
Emunim settlement movement
whose daughter was murdered
by Palestinian terrorists in the
West Bank last year, warned
against any wavering of that un-
compromising approach in the
wake of the trauma.
Countering such resistance to
any hint of a connection between
the ideology and strategy of the
religious-nationalist movement
and the spread of political vio-
lence, Rabbi Yehudah Amital of
the West Bank settlement of
Alon Shvut and Professor Avi
Ravitzky of the department of
Jewish philosophy at the Hebrew
University — both identified with
the politically moderate Meimad
movement — were outspoken in
identifying attitudes and behav-
ior that required deeper consid-
eration.
Decrying the "primitive form
of thinking" reflected in the state-
ment made to reporters by con-
fessed assassin Yigal Amir, Rabbi
Amital declared: "We are re-
sponsible for educating a gener-
ation of youngsters raised on
slogans and unable to think in so-
phisticated political terms."
He then outlined seven
"don'ts" to be adopted by his fel-
low-members of the religious-
Zionist camp, including a
cardinal rule against invoking
Halachah (Jewish religious law)
