Sydney, Australia (JTA) —
Perth, the capital of Western
Australia, has become the first
Australian municipality to es-
tablish a civic memorial to the
victims of the Holocaust.
With prominent government
officials in attendance, the memo-
rial was unveiled on the 57th an-
niversary of Kristallnacht, the
night of Nov. 9-10, 1938, when
marauding bands of Nazis de-
stroyed Jewish property in Ger-
many.
The memorial was erected in
Perth's Stirling Gardens, a prime
location in the city.
Although a number of Holo-
caust memorials have been es-
tablished by Jewish communities
across Australia, the Perth mon-
ument was a project of the city
and state governments.
Jewish Museum
Opens In Omaha
Omaha (JTA) — The first
permanent Jewish museum in
Nebraska has opened in Oma-
ha.
The Henry and Dorothy
Riekes Museum, located in the
city's Jewish Community Cen-
ter, features a restoration of the
B'nai Jacob Adas Yeshuron
Synagogue that was closed 10
years ago because of a lack of
Jewish families in the neigh-
borhood.
Included in the restoration of
the 90-year-old Orthodox syna-
gogue is the original ark, bimah,
Torah covers, pews, menorah,
windows, Torah crowns and oth-
er artifacts.
The Herbert Goldsten Wall of
Synagogue History will soon be
developed to tell the story of all
Nebraska synagogues and tem-
ples. The Hall of Memories en-
try to the museum will feature
an artistic creation telling the
story of Jewish life in Nebraska.
The Nebraska Jewish Histor-
ical Society, the creator of the
museum, was founded 13 years
ago by Mary Fellman and Oliv-
er Pollak, and today has more
'than 800 members:
Five Accused
In Arafat Plot
Jerusalem (JTA) — Palestinian
police arrested five Arabs in the
Gaza Strip on suspicion of plot-
ting the assassination of Pales-
tine Liberation Organization
leader Yassir Arafat.
The five were said to be fol-
lowers of terrorist Abu Nidal,
who has been at odds with Mr.
Arafat ever since he broke away
from the PLO leader.
