Harley Swedler

After graduating from college,
Mr. Swedler moved to New York
where he worked in high-end res-
idential architecture. He also cre-
ated architectural sculptures,
using building materials like
nuts, bolts and screws in his
work. Explained the artist: "I'm
into less traditional materials and
designs." ❑

leaves a great deal of room for in-
dividual interpretation. There are
36 aluminum candle holders with
highly polished finishes and eight
shamas holders with dull finish-
es. Each holder is a dome, made
from a balloon filled with plaster.
The number 44 was intentional-
ly chosen because it represents
the total number of candles lit
during Chanukah. "The idea was
to create a sea of shapes with no
base," said Mr. Swedler, a regis-
tered architect. "Each person can ALISON ASHTON
