His tone quality is unusual ly robust and soulful. He knows how to arch a melodic line so that it soars far above the everyday world, enticing lis- teners with uniquely spiritual insights. He digs deeply into the re- current melancholy in Shostakovich's somber concer- to, exposing its painful beauty. He captures the acid wit Prokofiev scatters through his concerto without ignoring its more tender moments. He de- lights in displaying the Glazunov concerto's melodic in- ventiveness. But it is in the ever-popular Tchaikovsky concerto that Vengerov works his most as- tonishing magic. Until now, my most cherished recording of this concerto featured Vengerov's teacher's teacher, Igor Ois- trakh, with his famous violin- ist-father, David Oistrakh, on the podium. After listening to Vengerov's performance (most ably backed up by Abbado and the Berlingers), Igor and his father have slipped to second place. Besides, as far as I know, no young women ever fought over Igor's bow hairs. ❑ - Northville's Historic ... ..... pledge to the h e .Jewish Campaign Tic kets arA ed i _ .......... plus your e' *Maxim Vengerov per- forms with the Detroit Sym- phony Orchestra under Neeme Jarvi's direction at Orchestra Hall at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30; 10:45 a.m. Friday (Coffee Series), Dec. 1; and 8:30 p.m. Satur- day, Dec. 2.
