romantic painting offers a stark
contrast to the industrious wood
carving of German artist Anselm
Kiefer's "Ways of Worldly Wis-
dom," an assemblage of famous
German intellectuals. The paint-
ings hang across from each oth-
er, and in a way, represent the
age-old conflict between the
ways of the heart and the calcu-
lations of the mind. It's a subtle,
yet effective juxtaposition.
More recent works provide the
exhibit with a sharper edge: the
dual faces of placidity and sor-
row in "Splithead" by Jonathan
Borofsky and Jean-Michel
Basquiat's "Tobacco Versus Red
Chief." Both works reach into the
American psyche and rattle the
foundation of "identity" in a ever-
expanding pluralistic society.

More recent
works provide
the sharper
edge.

These themes are hardly the
subject of coffee-break conver-
sations at PaineWebber. But
maybe there's a logic behind the
rising stock market that is im-
perceptible to the uninitiated. Is
corporate America becoming
home to the same artists who
mock the suit-and-tie, Willy Lo-
man culture?
Over the past 25 years, the
PaineWebber collection has
grown to more than 600 pieces.
The collected artworks in
PaineWebber's corporate offices
inspire sometimes unanswerable
questions about man's relation-
ship to contemporary society.
