Before the funeral, Ariel
made plans for the Israeli del-
egation of Seeds of Peace to
meet. Together, they walked
past Mr. Rabin's coffin.
Many from the group met
Mr. Rabin in 1993, when
Seeds of Peace went to Wash-
ington to witness the peace
treaty signing by Mr. Rabin,
Mr. Peres and PLO chairman
Yassir Arafat.
"I wouldn't have gone to The Seeds of Peace camp in Maine.
Mr. Rabin's coffin alone," Ariel
tive director of Seeds of Peace,
said. "We (members of the
Seeds of Peace delegation) can al- has been in touch from her

ticipants. She said the teens' con-

Among the outpouring of sup- cept of Israel has permanently
port Ariel received was a letter changed.
"My own impression is that
signed by the Egyptian delegation
of Seeds of Peace and a phone call they feel like they have lost more
than Rabin, their leader," Ms.
from an Egyptian friend.
"Of course he was shocked, too," Gottschalk said. `They have lost

he audience sat spellbound
at the Birmingham Temple
Monday night Nov. 13.
Rabbi Sherwin Wine
spoke with passion and emotion
about his hero, Yitzhak Rabin,
and his transformation and
growth from warrior to peace-
maker. Mr. Rabin's career par-
alleled the birth and evolution of
the State of Israel, he said.
"This has been an event that
has traumatized most of us," Rab-
bi Wine told the audience of more
than 500. "I couldn't imagine that
some assassin killed Yitzhak Ra-
bin. It was true — he was dead.
One of my heroes was no longer
there, no longer a leader. He was
a sabra, a military man, a tough
guy.
"Three years ago, he made a
profound transformation from a
military man to a leader for peace.
And then, there he was shaking
hands with Arafat, and later King
Hussein. And peace began in the
Middle East largely because of Ra-
bin. He was a patriot — someone
they (Israelis) could trust."
Ironically, what had been
scheduled to be a benefit for the
Eli Master Memorial Scholarship
for Huff anistic Rabbinical Train-
ing turned into a memorial for

both Mr. Rabin and Mr. Master,
a past president of the Birming-
ham Temple.
"All Jews — Israelis, non-Is-
raelis, Americans — are bonded
together in this terrible tragedy,"
said Marilyn Rowens, director of
the International Institute for Sec-
ular Humanistic Judaism. "I only
hope that we can be bonded to-
gether for peace the same way in
the future."
Tamara Feldstein, a third-year
rabbinic student at the Birming-
ham Temple, said, "It's just sick-
ening ... Jews had dreams of Zion.
The hopes that people had
yearned for were shot down with
that bullet."
"This has been the saddest day
that I can remember. It's too hor-
rible," said filmmaker Sue Marx.
"I don't think anything has af-
fected me so much since JFK
died."
Birmingham Temple executive
board member Michael Egren
said, "We all have this emptiness
in our stomach. It's a terrible day.
"Especially here at the Birming-
ham Temple, Rabbi Wine fre-
quently read from Rabin's
speeches at our services. He (Ra-
bin) was an important hero of all
of ours."
