utside the Camp Maas
lodge, snowflakes began
to fall. Inside, 17 teen-
agers from Temple Beth
El's senior youth group formed
a silent circle of remembrance.
Quietly, Drew Hall strummed
the guitar and voices joined his
song. Melissa Bolokofsky passed
the spice box and lit the braided
candle. The Havdalah service
ended with the teen-agers
solemnly noting the death of
Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin,
shot in Israel earlier that day.

tence was the theme of Beth El's
retreat. The group semiannual-
ly convenes at a camp to bond
and socialize.
"They really grow closer to-
some of the teen-agers, ini-
tially pessimistic about
Arab/Israeli co-existence,
acknowledged that maybe,
in the long run, there will
be tranquility among peo-
ples.
Earlier that weekend, the
goings-on became equally
intense when youth-
groupers participated in a
program to anonymously
express their deepest fears
and frustrations. On un-
signed pieces of paper, some
of them wrote troubles that
could be ranked on the
lighter side: "I'm tired and
my feet are cold."
Other messages were
more serious and received
immediate attention from
the group. Messages like:
"My best friend died and I can't
get over her."
