in high school on the south side
of Chicago, I heard about a play
being done at the Young Men's
Jewish Council Youth Center so
I went over and checked it out.
"The head of the drama pro-
gram at the center cast me in
Cole Porter's Anything Goes, and
I went on to Stop the World: I
Want to Get Off, Carousel and
West Side Stool. I just loved it all
and never stopped."
Patinkin studied acting at the
University of Kansas, spending
summers doing repertory the-
ater in Colorado. He moved to
drama classes at Juilliard and
landed work at Joseph Papp's
Public Theater. At the theater
for several years, Patinkin met
his wife, actress and writer
Kathryn Grody.
"When I was in the middle of
doing a cult play, Leave It to
Beaver Is Dead, I got called to
work on a musical, Evita." For
his 1980 Broadway debut of that
show, which Patinkin considers
the turning point of his career,
he won a Tony Award for his
portrayal of Che Guevara.
Patinkin, who has been in mo-
tion pictures as well, sets aside
time for benefit performances —
recently at the White House for
major donors to children's hos-
pitals across the country, soon
on cable TV to encourage breast
exams and at various times and
venues in support of AIDS char-
ities. On a regular basis, he pro-
motes the cancer-patient support
group Gilda's Club, which was
started in memory of the late,
Detroit-raised comedienne Gil-
da Radner.
With strong ties to the Jewish
community, Patinkin has been
working on a Yiddish album.
