• "I would like that the next gen- eration should know what hap- pened to our people for no reason...only because we were Jews, nothing else." Michael's father, Oskar, will provide music for Among the Rushes. A professional musician (he plays the accordion), he will compose and score folk music to accompany the bittersweet jour- ney home. A "lively, energetic, humorous man" and professional musician, Osi Sladek often spoke of the Holocaust to Michael as he was growing up. But the film has opened doors for at least one oth- er family involved. "The son of one of the men called to thank me for doing this," he said. "He said his father hadn't talked that much about the Holo- caust in years." Mr. Sladek hopes to begin film- ing in Europe in late April. Mean- while, he is raising money and mustering support for the non- profit project. "It didn't take any arm twist- ing to get it off the ground," he said. 'We're working with people who are very dedicated to this cause, very passionate, and ea- ger to have a chance to leave something behind." ❑ S' For information, contact Michael Sladek at Tatra Pro- ductions, P.O. Tips For Filmmakers As screenwriter, producer and/or director of 16 blockbuster films including The Bodyguard, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Body Heat, The Big Chill, The Acci- dental Tourist and Grand Canyon, Lawrence Kasdan knows a lot about filmmaking. Kasdan humorously recalled many a trial and tribulation Monday night at the Birming- ham Temple. Speaking to a sellout crowd of more than 500, Kasdan appeared at the event to benefit the Eli Master Memo- rial Scholarship for Humanis- tic Rabbinical Training. What should the fledgling screenwriter look for when de- veloping his or her script? Kas- dan advises: 1. Does the movie fulfill the promise you had to yourself when creating it? Does it sat- isfy you? 2. Will it stand the test of time — after 10, 20, or 100 years? How does the work hold up? What feelings does it com- municate? ❑ — Julie Smith Yolles For an in-depth look at Lawrence Kasdan, a Humanist in Hollywood, see related story in this issue. • i I • It's Time For The and gallery 20% OFF STOREWI DE SALE Monday, November 1st through Wednesday, November 22nd shop early and save on all your Holiday Gifts!
