VERY SMART LEASE

George B. Moser, M.D.

is pleased to announce his new associate

CORVETTE

Frederick D. Bartholomew, M.D.

Obstetrics and Gynecology

These are important functions.
But in the real world, they are
secondary to the need to keep our
community's elderly from dying
because they can't afford decent
health care, or keeping our dis-
abled from squalid facilities, or
helping our special-needs chil-
dren.
As the government social safe-
ty net is shredded and entitle-
ments written out of existence,
Jewish leaders will be forced to
choose between investing in the
Jewish future, and helping in-
creasingly desperate social ser-
vice recipients for whom Jewish
organizations may represent the
thin margin of survival.
The Jewish community is
more vulnerable than many to
the budgetary carnage now tak-
ing place under the Capitol dome.
Our medical facilities are some
of the best in the nation — with
significant help from a variety of
government programs. We take
better care of our elderly than
many groups, in part because we
have been successful in combin-
ing private philanthropy with
public programs. We have de-
veloped unique partnerships be-
tween voluntary groups and the
federal government for helping
immigrants and refugees gain a
toehold in this country.
All of these programs are about
to take unprecedented hits, with
more to come as Congress ca-
reens toward a balanced budget,
no matter what the human toll.
Finally, government activism
on behalf of the poor has repre-
sented a safety valve for the dis-
content inequality always breeds.
Democratic pluralism thrives
in an environment in which mi-
norities are not in desperate com-
petition with one another for
scarce resumes.
The government's generosity
in recent decades has helped keep
ethnic, racial and religious ani-
mosities in check; the rush to dis-
mantle those programs will
change the environment for mi-
norities, with consequences that
cannot possibly be good for the
-Jews. 0
