surgery for years," he said, adding
that there may even be more clin-
ics than patients in Canada.
While Dr. Segel believes PRK
will replace RK as the surgery of
choice for myopics, Dr. Beitman
believes RK surgery is here to
stay.
However, "I'm real excited
about laser and specifically set-
ting up centers and letting sur-
geons come in and perform the
procedure," he said.

Each of Vision Sculpting's 22
planned clinics will have a VISX
laser, which costs roughly
$525,000. Dr. Segel said they've
projected they'll do between 600
and 750 eyes during the first year
of business and somewhere
around 2,000 eyes by the fifth
year in each of the clinics.
The Summit laser, also de-
signed to correct nearsighted-
ness, has been approved by the
FDA. ❑

For Favorite Uncle

PAUL L. GABA SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

win brothers Michael and
Ken Shecter remember a lot
about their uncle, Ronald
Smiler. They also remem-
ber a lot about the generosity and
kindness shown to Mr. Smiler by
the Jewish Association for Resi-
dential Care (JARC), which pro-
vided the assistance to allow their
uncle to live in a virtually self-sup-
porting environment.
So when the Farmington Hills
brothers were presented with the
opportunity to help out
JARC, it was pure plea-
sure. The result: a donat-
ed re-landscaping of
JARC's Berlin Home in
Bloomfield Township.

"Our uncle was not in this
home, but he was part of the
JARC program," said Ken
Shecter, co-owner with Michael of
the Commerce Township-based
Shecter Landscaping Co. "They
took care of him from the time I
didn't even know JARC existed,"
Ken said.
JARC counselors would visit
Mr. Smiler to make sure he was
doing all right, Mr. Shecter said,
but for the most part, he was able
to care for himself
"He worked at Tiger Stadium
selling Cokes for a long time," he
said. "Because he was a recipient
of JARC services for years, we felt
it was appropriate to give back to
JARC what it gave to us."
The Shecter twins, age 32,
started, their business in .1983

with the help of $2,000 from He-
brew Free Loan, which they were
able to repay within the year.
"It was a very small business
at the time, and when you're 20
years old, $2,000 is a large
amount," Mr. Shecter said. 'When
we first started out, we were most-
ly mowing lawns and planting a
bush here and there. But over the
last seven years, we have gone
more to planting. Now, we're al-
most all landscaping."

The Shecter brothers green and preen
the landscape.

As design-builder-landscapers,
the Shecters are working on new
projects with residential develop-
ers like Herman Frankel. Today
they have a dozen accounts that
generate sales of over $1 million
annually — a figure beyond Mr.
Shecter's wildest dreams.
"This was started to provide
enough business to work my way
through college. That was the ini-
tial concept," he said. "We had no
idea it was going to evolve like
this."
Today, the company employs
25 people.
The Shecters still offer snow-
removal services and are looking
to add product sales to their busi-
ness.
The Berlin Home landscape
project was born out of JARC's
"Business Buddies" program. The
Shecters learned about the pro-
gram from a customer, JARC
board member. Joel Jacob. Then
they got a list of JARC homes,
