if the Mossad was indeed behind
it. They argue that both Islamic
Jihad and the more pragmatic Is-
lamic movement, Hamas, were
losing support in the Palestinian
street as the peace process start-
ed, however slowly, to deliver
practical results.
Latest opinion polls found sup-
port for Hamas down to 10 per-
cent of West Bank and Gaza Strip
Palestinians. Islamic Jihad ac-
counted for barely 2 percent. Iron-
ically, one of the most respected
pollsters is Khalil Shkaki, the as-
sassinated doctor's brother.
Khalil, a political scientist in the
West Bank town of Nablus, is
identified with Yassir Arafat's
mainstream Al Fatah group.
hi Gaza, Diab Nemer Allouh,
a Fatah spokesman, reflected the
concern that the Malta murder
would provoke a new wave of
bombings.
'his is a time to stop state ter-
rorism and the use of assassina-
tion to resolve disputes between
peoples," he said. "This kind of
step will only revive the violence
that the Palestinian National Au-
thority has been working to stop."
Mr. Allouh pledged that the
Palestinian police would take all
necessary precautions to prevent
attacks from Palestinian-con-
trolled territory, but he added:
"We hold the Israelis to blame for
all that is going to happen."
Maybe, but many Israelis
would retort that the Jihad
bombers don't need provocation.
They will attack wherever and
whenever they can. As Fathi
Shkaki told Linda Scherzer: "No
matter if it takes one generation
or three, our sons and grandsons
will complete what we have start-
ed." Israel's job is to make it hard-
er for them. El

JAMES D. BESSER WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENT
W
hen people on the
World Wide Web talk
about "links," they're
not talking about golf
courses or breakfast sausages.
Links between "sites" offering
related information, in fact, are
the raison d'etre for the Web —
that corner of the Internet that
combines rich graphics and a
dizzying assortment of informa-
tion.
But those links are created by
people, not machines. And some-
times, they are laden with un-
expected meaning.
So it was with the Yahoo
Home Page. Yahoo is a kind of
Internet Yellow Pages — one of
many on the 'net, but widely re-
garded as one of the best.
Yahoo gives visitors tools for
searching the uncharted reach-
es of the 'net with a simple, fill-
in-the-blanks form. Its home
page — the starting point for pok-
ing around Yahoo — offers an
easy-to-use directory of informa-
tion arranged in categories such
as entertainment, education, pol-
itics, society and culture.
In that last category, select "re-
ligion," then cursor down to the
middle of the list for "Jewish" —
and presto, you're offered a tidy
array of Jewish resources from
all over the world, all accessible
with just the click of a mouse.
Fine, right? But recently, some
Jewish net surfers were shocked
to find a link to "Messianic Ju-
daism," the Christian sect that
aggressively seeks converts by
combining the trappings of Jew-
ish life with Evangelical Chris-
tianity.
Messianics endlessly complain
that they aren't regarded as
"real" Jews by Jewish organiza-
tions; Jewish groups take the tra-
ditional view that people who
believe in Jesus Christ are Chris-
tian, even if they keep kosher and
call their religious leaders "rabbi."
Needless to say, Yahoo found
itself with a major-league
headache when Jewish Inter-
netters got wind of the listing.
Spurred to action by descrip-
tions of the controversy on many
Jewish Internet mailing lists,
Jewish users bombarded the Ya-
hoo management with E-mail,
suggesting that the listing was
an affront to Judaism.
Yahoo's management re-
sponded by insisting that it is not
their place to determine who is a
Jew and who isn't — a response
that won some sympathy, if not
approval.
"What we are claiming is that
as a topic of information, Mes-
sianic Judaism is significantly
relevant to the topic of Judaism,"
a Yahoo executive wrote in a pub-
lic message on the controversy.
"The mere fact that Messianic
Jews claim that they maintain
Jewish identity and culture
makes them relevant to the top-
ic of Judaism."
In the same way, Yahoo offi-
cials said, they list "atheism"
under the religion category, de-
spite the somewhat oxymoronic
