In 1933-34 she set up the Florence Silk Shop on Jos. Campau in Hamtramck; she retired in 1953. In retirement, she became a homemaker while her husband, Joseph D. Shiffman, re- mained active in real estate until he died in 1967. More than 26 years ago, she married widower Irving Hermelin. Last year, Mrs. Hermelin visited the White House, where Hillary Rodham Clinton knew her by name. "She was inter- generational ... in this day of fleeting relationships, she was a symbol of stability," said David Hermelin. Mrs. Hermelin was a long- time member and supporter of local and Israeli charities. She was a life member of Hadas- sah, National Council of Jew- Florence Hermelin ish Women and Pioneer Women. In 1979, the Jewish Theological Seminary of America gave the Hermelins its National Award for Community Service. Israel Bonds made a similar award in 1982. The couple es- tablished scholarships for the international Or- ganization for Rehabilitation through Train- ing and for Boys Town Jerusalem. DR. IRVING S. BERN- STEIN, 82, of West Bloom- field, died Nov. 5. His family settled in Flint and he later at- tended Northwestern Universi- ty in Chicago from which he re- ceived his bachelor of science and doctor of dental surgery degrees. Dr. Bernstein served in the U.S. Army as a company com- mander of the 185th station hospital and commander of the 435th portable surgical hospi- tal in New Guinea. He received three Bronze Stars and a South Pacific Medal Award Ribbon. After the war, he opened a dental office in Clio and was at that location for 50 years. He was a member of the Clio Ro- tary and served as its president and song leader. He was a member of B'nai B'rith in Flint and the B'nai B'rith Detroit Oakland County Chapter. His synagogue affiliations included Congregation Beth Israel, Flint, and Congregation Beth Shalom, Oak Park. His professional affiliations included the American Dental Association, Michigan State Dental Association, Genesee County Dental Society and the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity. She was a longtime member of Adat Shalom Synagogue and Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
