"My first professional acting
job was at age 9 in the New York
Yiddish theater," Mr. Hoffman
recalled. "My parents moved to
Israel when I was 11, and I was
in several. films, television shows
and lots and lots of theater there.
"I came back to the United
States in 1977, went to the Uni-
versity of Miami to study the-
ater, got my bachelor's degree
and took lessons at the Circle in
the Square Theatre in New
York.
"I've been going back and forth
between the Jewish-oriented
theater and the mainstream
English theater and have been
very lucky."
The luck spilled over into his
personal life. While appearing in
Finkel's Follies with Emmy
Award winner Fyvush Finkel
from TV's "Picket Fences," he
met and fell in love with his wife,
Laura Turnbull, who has tak-
en an acting hiatus to look after
their 9-month-old daughter,
Arielle Bluma.
"I think Too Jewish? somehow
touches a nerve among older
Jews who look back in nostalgia
and younger Jews who make
discoveries about their heritage,"
Mr. Hoffman said.
"Non-Jews come out of the
show saying they've learned
something about Judaism
and their own immigrant fam-
ilies." ❑

Too Jewish? will be per-
formed at 8 p.m. Saturday,
Nov. 11, at the Jewish Com-
munity Center. For informa-
tion, call 810/661-1000.

Spiced Red Cabbage

A New Year's twist, this dish makes a colorful addition to a tradi-
tional holiday table. Make a resolution to serve it often, too!

4 cups
1/4 cup
1/2 cup
1/4 tsp.
1/4 tsp.

shredded red cabbage
cider vinegar
water
ground allspice
ground cinnamon

In a saucepan, combine shredded cabbage with all other ingre-
dients, except apples. Cover and cook over moderate heat for 15
minutes, tossing several times so the cabbage will cook evenly.
Add apples, and toss again. Cover, and cook 5 minutes longer.
Add sugar.
If more water is needed during cooking, add two or three table-
spoons, but when the.dish is done, all moisture should have been
cooked away.
