said of himself: "If you want to
know all about Andy Warhol,
just look at the surface of my
paintings and films and me, and
there I am. There's nothing be-
hind it."
Ironically, that might be
Mr. Warhol's greatest legacy.
The lasting significance of an
artist's work is often determined
by whether it embodies the so-
cial milieu in which it was cre-
ated.
Mr. Warhol's place seems as-
sured. Art critic Robert Rosen-
blum wrote, "If nothing were to
remain of the years from 1962 to
1987 but a Warhol retrospective,
future historians and archaeolo-
gists would have a fuller time
capsule to work with than any of-
fered by another artist of the pe-
riod."
Farmington Hills resident
Cele Landay, a retired interior
designer, has loaned her Warhol
collection to the plaza exhibit.
The "Ten Portraits of Jews" cir-
cle her living room. The collection
includes portraits of Einstein,
Sarah Bernhardt, Louis Bran-
deis, Martin Buber, Franz Kaf-
ka, Sigmund Freud, the Marx
Brothers, Golda Meir and
Gertrude Stein.
The silkscreen portraits con-
tain as many as 15 screens and
21 colors.
"I love living with this group
of people," said Mrs. Landay,
who serves as a trustee on the
Detroit Institute of Art's Friends
of Modern Art Committee and
the Birmingham-Bloomfield Art
Association.
Shortly before his death, Mr.
Warhol appeared at the DIA
for a book signing, Mrs. Landay
recalls. Autograph-seekers
handed Mr. Warhol soup cans,
Brillo boxes and just about any-
thing else for him to sign. Sud-
denly, one man jumped on top
of the table in front of Mr.
Warhol, pulled down his pants
and asked the artist to sign his
underwear.
Without missing a beat, Mrs.
Landay says, Mr. Warhol oblig-
ed, then calmly said, "Next." El
