hold its annual Berry Family
scholar in residence weekend
with Rabbi Reuven Hammer,
Nov. 18, 19.
During Shabbat services, Rab-
bi Hammer will deliver the ser-
mon "Rereading the Bible: How
Rabbinic Midrash Transforms
Jewish Text into a Modern
Idom." Following Shabbat ser-
vices, there will be a luncheon
where Rabbi Hammer will speak
on "Israel: perceptions and Mis-
perceptions, Are We One-Amer-
ican and Israeli Jews?"
On Sunday morning at 9:30
a.m., the Men's Club will host
Rabbi Hammer at breakfast. The
topic will be "Conservative Ju-
daism in Israel Today." Reserva-
tions are needed for the Shabbat
luncheon and Men's Club break-
fast. The public is invited. For in-

Hosts Scholar

Rabbi Reuven Hammer, the
metro-area Conservative Move-
ment's scholar in residence, will
be at Congregation Beth Shalom
on Nov. 8, 10 and 11, under the
joint sponsorship of the Congre-
gation's Cultural Commission
and religious school.
Rabbi Hammer will speak to
members, religious school chil-
dren and parents at a Shabbat
dinner and drash on Friday, Nov.
10, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on
"Midrash: Adapting Biblical Sto-
ries to Modern Times."
During Shabbat Services Nov.
11, the rabbi will deliver the ser-
mon on "For God's Sake: Are
Prayers Relevant to Modern
Jewish Living?" A kiddush will
follow the service.
The rabbi will address Rabbi
David Nelson's monthly study
group luncheon on Wednesday,
Nov. 8, from noon to 1:30 p.m.
His topic will be "A Conservative
Rabbi in Israel: Struggles and
Opportunities." Rabbi Hammel's
visit is made possible in part by
a grant from the Max M. Fisher
Jewish Community Foundation.
