of people. He limits himself in
terms of ideas."
Among the myriad Russian
politicians and parties for whom
Mr. Kartsev sees a future: the
nationalistic parties; the YBL
bloc (so called for its leaders,
Yavlinsky, Boldyrev, Lukin), es-
pecially Grigory Yavlinsky, an
economist and strong support-
er of a free-market economy;
and even the communists.
Russia is a nation "without
law and morality," Mr. Kartsev
says. So it's not surprising that
even the domination and soci-
ety-without-freedom that gen-
erally characterizes communist
rule seems appealing. At least
it is some kind of order.
In fact, Mr. Kartsev himself
sees the collapse of the Soviet
Union as a disaster.
"Economically it was bad,
that is clear," he says. "Politi-
cally, there used to be one big
bear that had nuclear capabili-
ties — at least it was pre-
dictable.
"Today, no such bear exists.
In its place are 10, maybe 15,
and that's much worse, much
more dangerous." O
