He and another founding mem-

for Social Research in New York
City for ideas on how to structure
the program and came up with a
similar model.
"It's a group made up of highly
educated people in various pro-
fessional fields who bring a
tremendous amount of back-
ground to the activities of the or-
ganization," said Mr. Shaw. The
IRP has executive and governing
boards, committees that plan
events and train facilitators, and
28 groups that focus on subjects
ranging from American-Israeli re-
lations to medical
ethics to Yiddish to
money management.
Each of the groups is
facilitated by a mem-
ber who has expertise
in the area of medicine,
law, art or finance.
"The other unique
thing about it is, a lot
of the members belong
to two, three and as
many as four groups.
They are self-directed
groups. Nobody from
the outside tells them
what they should be
doing," Mr. Shaw said.
