even prisons. They were sur-
prised to learn that I wasn't a
child of a cantor or a rabbi, that
I didn't always want to be a can-
tor, and that I liked movies, video
games, and collecting old records,
cassettes and 8-tracks.
This hour remains one of my
most memorable. I know it re-
mains with many of those chil-
dren because they often remind
me in the halls of our school.
Their teacher remarked to me lat-
er, "Can you believe most of these
kids thought that all day long you
pray in your office?" As well, my
contemporaries often express sur-
prise that I am a real person, that
I every much live in this world

ust because your children attend college out-of-town
doesn't mean they have to be out-of-touch. Sure, you can
call them every week. But you can't cover everything. After
all, that's what we do. We'll tell them all about what's happening in
their hometown, the nation and world. We'll give them stimulating
viewpoints, and interesting features. But most of all, we'll bring
them home every week. And that's good news for everyone.

Now it costs a lot less to bring them home.

So, I thank The Jewish News
for their light, yet illuminating
article on some of the chazzanim
in the Detroit Jewish communi-
ty and our secular musical tastes.
I trust that when young people of
this generation see us as ordinary
people, we will have a chance to
reach them. When Jews perceive
us as accessible, they will better
be able to appreciate that we try
to raise the musical standards
and spirituality of the bimah and
the congregation.
