`These are designed to attract
a different kind of audience,"
said Mr. Gladstone, who has
been a guest speaker at pre-con-
cert lectures and addresses uni-
versity students. 'They broaden
the role of the symphony in any
community.
"Usually institutions like sym-
phony orchestras don't have
enough money to take a chance
on something as different as the
Pendragons unless the perform-
ers are pretty well established."
The Pendragons devised their
routines after meeting more
than a decade ago while in col-
lege in California.
Using gymnastic skills they
developed separately, the duo
strives to bring their physical
prowess to illusions that focus
more on people than props.
According to the Encyclopedia
of Magic, the Pendragons are the
world's fastest illusionists. In one
trick, for instance, Jonathan
starts out in a locked box with
Charlotte on top; within no more
than 2.4 seconds — sometimes
as fast as 1.8 seconds — they
trade places.
The couple's talents have
brought international honors in-
cluding selection as Best Illu-
sionists at the International
Magic Awards and Magicians'
Favorite Illusionists, which was
voted by a committee of more
than 200 stellar magicians, mag-
ic producers and authors. ❑
