Boston Opens
New Memorial

Boston (JTA) — Amid the land-
marks here to patriotism, the
American Revolution and reli-
gious freedom, a monument to
Holocaust victims has taken its
place on the Freedom Trail.
The New England Holocaust
Memorial, six steel and glass
towers representing the 6 mil-
lion Jews who died at the hands
of the Nazis, was illuminated re-
cently for the first time.
The six towers also represent
both Jewish hope for the future
and the chimneys of the Nazi
camps.
The memorial, designed by
San Francisco architect Stanley
Saitowitz, is located in a small
park near Boston's famous Fa-
neuil Hall.
Each tower bears the name of
one of six major death camps —
Auschwitz-Birkenau, Chelinno,
Sobibor, Treblinka, Majdanek
and Belzec.
The hollow steel towers are
covered with etched glass bear-
ing numbers from 0000001 to
6000000, in random order, to
memorialize the 6 million Jews
killed. The numbers also sym-
bolize the tattoos given to the
Jews when they arrived at the
camps.
Visitors to the memorial walk
through the chimneys and look
down into pits with renlistic-look-
ing embers and smoke reminis-
cent of the crematoria used to
dispose of the victims' corpses.
Lit from the inside, the towers
are visible above the area sky-
line at night.

For Escapees
Jerusalem (JTA) — Palestinian
police are searching for three
Hamas terrorists who escaped
from a jail run by the Palestine
Liberation Organization.
The three apparently broke
out ofjail after cutting through
wires in their cell, Israel Tele-
vision reported.
One of the escapees was con-
victed of murdering two Israelis;
another was convicted of carry-
ing out terrorist attacks in the
Gaza Strip; and the third was
convicted of planning a suicide
> terrorist attack near a Jewish
settlement in Gaza.
Meanwhile, Israeli security
forces arrested six Hamas and
Islamic Jihad activists in the
West Bank town of Jenin.
Jenin is scheduled to be the
first of six West Bank towns to
be handed over before the end
of the year to the Palestinian
Authority under the terms of
the interim phase agreement for
extending West Bank autono-
my.
