Specter Brings
OJ To Hill

It was just a question of time
before the O.J. Simpson case pro-
duced a congressional investiga-
tion. And Sen. Arlen Specter,
R-Pa., a GOP presidential con-
tender and former prosecutor, is
just the man for the job.

Arlen Specter:
Focus on racism.

Mr. Specter, the only Jew in the
1996 presidential sweepstakes,
announced plans for hearings on
the controversial case — and in
particular, on the racial argu-
ments used by Simpson defense
lawyer Johnnie Cochran, argu-
ments that focused the national
spotlight on the widening gulf be-
tween blacks and whites.
Mr. Specter, facing the longest
of odds in his quest for the nomi-
nation, held hearings on right-
wing militias this summer —
hearings that critics said gave too
much free publicity to the fringe-
group leaders and not enough to
the victims of domestic terrorism.
But the hearings provided
something the hard-pressed
Specter campaign needs the most
— media attention. The Specter
campaign is apparently hoping
OJ hearings might do the same.
Meanwhile, Mr. Specter con-
tinues his running feud.
At a debate in New Hampshire,
he accused Christian Coalition
founder and chairman Pat
Robertson of rejecting the concept
of church-state separation.
In a "Dear Arlen" letter, Mr.
Robertson said that he was
"deeply troubled by the fact that
you continue to misrepresent my
deeply held convictions."
He repeated his insistence that
"I believe in the historical consti-
tutional standard of the separa-
tion of church and state. Every
time you declare the contrary, you
are uttering a blatant falsehood."
Mr. Specter quickly fired off a
response insisting that Mr.
Robertson evaded his real ques-
tion — whether or not the tele-
vision evangelist once called the
doctrine of church-state separa-
tion a "lie of the left."
Mr. Specter's office said the leg-
islator is still waiting for a reply.
