The once-exclusive Henri Bendel,
a bastion of good taste for fash-
ion-minded ladies, is opening its
sixth location at Somerset Col-
lection North.
The century-old boutique, a re-
tailer of women's finery, will be
among 120 retailers in the ex-
pansion of the Troy shopping cen-
ter, and is expected to open Aug.
16 next year.
"We're very excited about it,"
said Becky Maccardini, director
of operations at Forbes/Cohen
Properties, the builder and leas-
ing agent for the Somerset Col-
lection. "We think it adds
immeasurably to the selection we
can offer customers in this mar-
ketplace. It adds one more store
that's one of a kind."
Ms. Maccardini declined to re-
veal the names of other shops and
restaurants that are negotiating
for space in the shopping center's
new wing, which will be anchored
by a Hudson's and a Nordstrom
department store. She said 90
percent of the available space in
the expansion is "committed."
Henri Bendel, with a flagship
store on Fifth Avenue in New
York, offers cutting-edge cloth-
ing, jewelry, cosmetics, dinner-
ware and the like. It will occupy
15,000 square feet of the 950,000-
square-foot expansion.
"It won't be as large as New
York's, but in terms of merchan-
dise, selection, style, names, it will
be very similar," Ms. Maccardini
said.
The Fifth Avenue store com-
prises 35,000 square feet.
The Limited Inc., the compa-
ny started by Leslie Wexner in
1969, bought Henri Bendel 10
years ago, expanding it to vari-
ous locations around the country,
including Chicago.
Ms. Maccardini said Forbes/Co-
hen and retailers seek each other
out.
"We were certainly talking to
people at The Limited, which
owns other stores, including Ben-
del. As we unfolded information
on the marketplace, it was some-
thing they were interested in.
Knowing how successful this
Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman
Marcus are, it certainly got their
attention," she said.
Philip Monaghan, vice presi-
dent of marketing for Henri Ben-
del, said the Somerset North
location will open about the same
time as the retailer's fifth store in
New Jersey. He said The Limited
Inc.'s long-range plan is to open 50
Henri Bendel stores nationwide.
"I think we'll be a very positive
complement to Hudson's and
Nordstrom," he said.
Last year, Bendel posted $84
million in sales. El
