munity will be anxious to hear
more about his views on Israel.
The general was warmly re-
ceived during a 1991 address to
the American Israel Public Af-
fairs Committee shortly after the
Gulf War where he said, "Let
there never be any question
about our commitment to Israel.
Let there never be any question
that America will stand by Israel.
And let there be no question that
America will stand by Israel in
whatever the future holds."
Right now he is defined as a
war hero and a black liberal Re-
publican, said Mr. Mitchell. "No
one is taking a shot at him. If he
runs, someone will go after him
and define points he doesn't want
defined."
Dr. Gerald Faverman, of the
Faverman Group in East Lans-
ing, said the general has to run
as a Republican because the rise
of a third party is still problem-
atic in America. Some analysts
also think Gen. Powell, as a vice
presidential candidate, could add
strength to any ticket.
Ms. Wechsler doesn't care
about the general's party label.
She thinks the Jewish commu-
nity should support him because
he is not too right- or left-wing.
"He is not anti-Semitic and he is
not a racist," she said.

Ben Schecter, also of South-
field, assumes many Jews would
support a Powell for President
candidacy.
Mr. Schecter isn't entirely sure
he would back the retired army
general. "Gen. Powell is a great
patriot who believes fully in equal-
ity," said Mr. Schecter. He wore a
Powell for President sticker and
waited politely for several hours
at Barnes & Noble for the gener-
al to sign a copy of his book.
Mr. Schecter would like to hear
the general's stance on Israel be-
fore making up his mind for certain
on the general's political chances.
Earlier, at a press conference,
Gen. Powell spoke about his desire
to see leaders from the Jewish com-
munity and the Nation of Islam
meet to resolve their differences.
While his desire to see both
parties dialogue may not sit well
with some Jews, Mr. Mitchell
said Gen. Powell's firm stance
against the Million Man March
shed positive light on the gener-
al, at least in the eyes of the Jew-
ish community.
"Powell is a guy who has a
warm spot for Jews," Mr. Bloom-
field said. "But if Jewish Repub-
licans are looking for a more
pro-Israel candidate, they can
find it in Arlen Specter." ❑
