The other possible subject of
`he' in that phrase would be God,
so that the verse reads as if it's
composed of two separate phas-
es linked by semi-colon. In the
first, we are told God enlarges
Japhet, but in the second we are
told that for Himself dwells only
and exclusively in the tents of
Shem. From this perspective,
Shem dare not let Japhet in; the
danger is too great that Japhet
will try to take over and may very
well destroy the protective walls
so painstakingly developed by
Shem. Moreover, our Jewish-Is-
raeli contribution to the world is
God — and God's realm belongs
exclusively with Shem.
But this second reading total-
ly ignores the deep connection be-
tween Shem and Japhet. Just as
they acted together to cover
Noah, it is important that their
relationship continue, which can
only transpire if all the 'enlarge-
ments' of culture somehow find
shelter in the tents of Shem, all
the advances of society somehow
relegated under the tent of Torah
values. The Torah story intro-
ducing the divine charge linking
Shem and Japhet suggests that
the two brothers are morally
bound up in each other's des-
tinies.
Maimonides would have sci-
ence and philosophy as necessary
courses in a higher Torah acade-
my (Yeshiva Gedolah), but not
science for the sake of science so
much as science for the sake of
God. Only through a Torah ori-
entation can scientific discover-
ies maintain moral responsibility
and can psychologists truly
emerge as doctors of the soul.
The dangers may well be in-
herent in such a system, but the
glories tantalizingly beckon to-
wards the promise of Messianic
Age, of a world perfected under
the Kingship of God.
