blacks and whites. In Israel,
Jews and Arabs attend separate
schools, in part because integra-
tion would necessitate extensive
bussing. Similar to whites and
blacks in America, most Jews
and Arabs live apart from one
another.
Even though the Abraham
Fund supports "school pairing,"
which has matched Jewish and
Arab schools, and, although U.S.
schools continue attempts at de-
segregation, both countries have
a long way to go before reaching
a dream of racial and intercul-
tural harmony, Institute partic-
ipants said.
Marcie Orley attended the
conference and said she, like the
panelists, hopes for peace be-
tween Arab and Jew, but won-
ders how to support pluralism
and equality without diminish-
ing Israel's status as a Jewish
state.
"I think coexistence is very im-
portant," she said. "But I think
what all of us have in mind is Is-
rael as a Jewish state instead of
another Middle East nation with
a unique ethnic background."
Protesting ongoing peace ne-
gotiations were representatives
of the group the Jewish Idea,
who stood outside Adat Shalom
with picket signs. Meanwhile, in-
side, the Institute continued with
smaller-group discussions in
which less overt opposition was
nevertheless evident.

"Why do I get
the feeling
you know what I'm
talking about?"

Although the women tried to
stick to topics they agreed upon,
conversations in several cases led
to debate over basic historical
facts and land ownership.
Elaine Cohen of Commerce
Township said communication
might not provide for smooth
sailing all of the time, but "it's al-
ways a start."
Said Ms. Soliman, "The main
influence women's organizations
can have is to try to understand
the other point of view. The
changes will come later on.
"The women's organizations
are not supposed to make others
change their point of view," she
said. "I think women's organiza-
tions work mostly on cooperation,
trying to understand instead of
influence the other side."
Sponsors of last week's event
included: Hadassah, the Jewish
Federation Women's Campaign
and Education Department, Na-
tional Council of Jewish
Women, Women's American
ORT, the Abraham Fund, The
Jewish News, as well as 16 sup-
porting organizations in metro
Detroit.
