the exhibit can claim a diversi-
ty of opinions about the inter-
pretive value of the poem.
Several pieces are infused
with custom. There's a Byzan-
tine-styled silk challah cover em-
broidered with golden and silk
threads and jade and pearls in
a gold setting; a meticulously
woven tzedakah holder; and or-
nately sculptured Shabbat can-
dle holders.
Yet there are more conceptu-
al and playful pieces, as well: a
bizarre glass-rod illuminated
sculpture with attached faces of
/ modern Jewish women and a
whimsical, nearly satirical im-
age on ceramic, created in re-
sponse to the line: "She opens
her mouth with wisdom, and a
lesson of kindness is on her
tongue."
The exhibit's grittiest piece is
an
etched and weathered pho-
\_,
tograph on eroded steel; it pic-
tures five woman sitting amid
the hearth.
The exhibit's strongest piece,
a series of hands captured in
myriad gestures, makes a sim-
ple statement about the common
touch that runs through main-
taining a household, raising a
family and preparing the daily
nourishment.
Interestingly, the highly sym-
bolic exhibit offers a stark con-
trast to the industrial metal
sculpture of Ray Katz, exhibit-
ed on the main floor of the
gallery.
"Knowing that we had a
> strongly masculine show down-
stairs, I think the 'Women of
Valor' pieces of art offers a fas-
cinating counterpoint," Mrs. Nel-
son said.
Yet the two exhibits might not
be as different as they seem.
Both reveal symbolic responses
, to a guiding philosophy. For the
/ artists in "A Woman of Valor,"
the "Aishet Hayil" provides the
inspiration, while Mr. Katz calls
his work "a tribute to the evolu-
tionary process of life and the
transcendental experience in-
herent in life's journey."
The drawings and sculpture
for Mr. Katz's exhibit took him
/—) about one year to complete. Al-
though he works in dark and
buffed steel, Mr. Katz has cre-
ated sculpture that is highly flu-
id. His repeated forms of a circle,
triangle and a spring capture a
raw, bold vision indicative of the
many mechanistic impressions
of an industrial age.
"His work represents an in-
dustrial resilience," Mrs. Nelson
said. "It is strong, powerful and
masculine in nature." ❑
