Alcohol Exports
On The Increase

Jerusalem — Exports of wine
and other alcoholic beverages
have increased dramatically
since 1990, Industry and Trade
Minister Micha Harish said
while opening the Wine Festival
at the Carmel Mizrahi winery
in Rishon Lezion.
He said exports totaled $19.75
million last year, a 371 percent
increase from $5.316 million in
1990.
Exports of wine and grape
juice — mainly to the United
States, Russia, and Britain —
totaled $6.25 million last year,
Mr. Harish said.
Exports of other alcoholic bev-
erages, excluding beer, totaled
$13.5 million.
In the first months of 1995,
the rise continued, and exports
are expected to reach $21 mil-
lion this year, he added. He said
most of the increase came from
exports to the former Soviet
Union and other parts of east-
ern Europe.
. "Israel is selling ice to Eski-
mos," he said. "We are exporting
vodka to the former Soviet
Union. Carmel Mizrahi exports
some 75 percent of the total ex-
ports, and its exports increased
45 percent a year between 1992
and 1995. The company is one
of the world's 100 largest pro-
ducers and exporters of alcoholic
beverages."
