it off until negotiators have had
a chance to work their way
through the Jerusalem issue."

Circus Camps
Boost Morale

There was a benefit performance
of the Cirque du Soleil and it had
special meaning for one Jewish
activist.
Andy Goldman, Ethiopian pro-
jects director for the North Amer-
ican Conference on Ethiopian
Jews, is the founder of the Circus
Ethiopia — a project that helped
boost the morale of Ethiopian
Jewish children before most of
them emigrated to Israel.
But the circus continues, now
primarily with Muslim and
Christian kids, along with a
handful of the original Jewish
members. Cirque du Soleil, the
innovative professional circus
troop, has become a primary
benefactor of the Ethiopian pro-
ject.
"Initially, the Circus Ethiopia
was an afterschool project for the
Jewish kids that ended up rais-
ing the morale of the entire Jew-
ish community," Mr. Goldman
said. "It started with learning ba-
sic juggling and other circus
skills; eventually, they began to
perform. First, neighbors came
to see them; then, they began to
travel."
Last summer, the troop toured
Holland; Mr. Goldman is trying
to raise the money to bring them
to this country, and to set up a re-
union with the 40 original mem-
bers now in Israel.
"Cirque du Soleil has been
sponsoring the project since the
beginning," he said. "At the end
of every tour, they give almost all
of their equipment and costumes
to us."
Mr. Goldman wants to build
on the success of the Ethiopian
project by starting a children's
circus in Israel — and possibly in
the public housing projects of
Washington, D.C.
Why his interest in the circus?
"I'm a little crazy," he said.
"When I was working with the
Ethiopian Jewish kids, I saw how
they were awed by learning how
to juggle. It's something that
really brings people together."
