As part of the celebration, with a generous gift from Maida Portnoy in memory of her mother Edith Frank, an IRP founder, the Insti- tute has produced a special com- memorative journal chronicling the history of IRP. Membership in IRP is open to all JCC members, age 55 and over, who are retired, semi-retired, or will soon be retired. Study groups are based on the concept of peer learning and topics range from Contemporary Literature to Med- ical Ethics to Dancing to Yiddish. In addition, IRP offers social events, trips, retreats, lectures, and more. As one member stated, "IRP came along at the right time to fill a void, offering intellectual stimu- lation and providing meaningful relationships with a whole group of new friends." T en years ago, a group of sev- en recently retired individ- uals got together and decided that the Detroit Jewish community needed a forum where active, intelligent, motivat- ed seniors could pursue continued learning and education in an at- mosphere of self direction. Mod- eled after the New School of New York, and under the guidance of past JCC Director, Irwin Shaw, they created the Institute for Re- tired Professionals in 1985. Now boasting almost 300 mem- bers who participate in over 27 dif- ferent study groups, the IRP will mark its 10th Anniversary with a gala celebration on Thursday, Oc- tober 26, 1995 at Congregation Beth Achim in Southfield. The original seven members and staff that will be honored that evening include: Alan Kandel, Bebe Bar- nett, Bertha Chomsky, Leon Lucas, Hilda Lucas, Ethel Levine Krause, Encor L.r- fr)iin >995 0040 VOICEY8All TOURA/441eAfT WHO,• All adults 18 and up WW1• Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament WHERE; JCC (Maple/Drake Facility) 6600 W.Maple, West Bloomfield WHEN; Saturday & Sunday December 2 & 3, 1995 fins $200 per team (includes 2 games, t-shirts, trophies to champions) person maximum 8 player minimum MAI RULES' 10 allt SR/4A/ OR TOM' 4T /8/0166/-7683 FOR MORE /A/FORMAT/OM This Week At...
