n its 11th year, the Michigan
Jewish Sports Hall of Fame is
entering the corporate world.
It's not that the volunteer
group has become a big business.
Instead, it is taking a big-busi-
ness approach to broadening its
fund-raising goals and its base
in the Jewish community.
Through the 11th annual
MJSHOF induction dinner at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek on
Monday, Nov. 6, and last sum-
mer's fifth annual Hank Green-
berg Memorial Golf & Tennis
Invitational, supporters are rais-
ing funds for cancer research, the
annual Hall of Fame Games for
persons with disabilities and col-
lege scholarships for high-school
athletes.
By approaching businesses for
corporate sponsorships, Howard
Gourwitz and his MJSHOF com-
mittee are turning up the heat
— and the results — for these
charitable efforts.
They also are turning up the
fun, and trying to attract fami-
lies to the dinner by offering fi-
nancial incentives and activities
for everyone.
"We are encouraging adults to
bring their children and grand-
children," dinner chairman Mr.
Gourwitz said. "They get to meet
sports celebrities, learn about
tzedakah (charity) and have a
good time as a family."
To help, the MJSHOF has
priced tickets for those 18 and
under at the person's age. In the
past, tickets were $50 for persons
up to age 13 and $100 for those
14-18. Adult tickets are $100 per
person. Caterer Paul Kohn will
provide coney islands, nachos,
pizza and cotton candy for the 18-
and-under set.
Attracting the youngsters, and
adults as well, will be the Hall of
Fame inductees: Cleveland In-
dians great Myron "Joe" Gins-
berg, boxer Benny Goldberg and
hockey star Mike Hartman; and
Alvin N. Foon Memorial Award
honoree Will Robinson, a leg-
endary coach in Detroit high-
school ranks and with the
Pistons.
Adding to the fun will be a
$25,000 basketball shoot-out.
Four persons, chosen randomly
from the crowd, will each have
one chance to make a three-quar-
ters-of-the-court (75-foot) basket.
"If he or she makes it," Mr.
Gourwitz said, "the shooter gets
$12,500 and the Michigan Jew-
ish Sports Hall of Fame gets
$12,500."
The MJSHJOF has taken out
insurance to cover the $100,000

risk, and Mr. Gourwitz hopes
"they all make the shot. Think of
the excitement."
The evening also will feature
a sports memorabilia silent auc-
tion.
Detroit Pistons owner Bill
Davidson, a past honoree, will
present the Foon Award to Coach
Robinson, and a number of cur-
rent Pistons are expected at the
event.
Publisher Arthur Horwitz will
present The Jewish News high-
school athlete of the year awards
to Brian Gurwin, who graduat-
ed from Farmington Harrison
High, and Stacey Young, West
Bloomfield High; and the Bill
Hertz Memorial Scholarships to
scholar-athletes of the year Amy
Siegel and Simon Galed of
Berkley High.
Masters of ceremonies for the
evening will be Red Wings broad-
casters Dave Strader and Mick-
ey Redmond.
Mr. Gourwitz credits Steve Si-
mons, who chaired the Green-
berg tournament this summer,
with moving the organization "to
a whole new level." The tourna-
ment raised $30,000 for cancer
research through the Sinai
Health Care Foundation. He said
Mr. Simons, Howard Berlin,
William Berris and Eric.Krause
have been instrumental in at-
tracting 18 corporate sponsors
for the golf and tennis tourna-
ment and the Nov. 6 dinner.
With the sponsorships, Mr.
Gourwitz has set a $50,000 fund-
raising goal for Nov. 6. In the
past, most of the dinner proceeds
were raised through the silent
auction and an advertising jour-
nal. ❑
