Li. YARMULKE PRINTING • KOSHER WINES & GRAPE JUICE sus is an innocent thing, right? It's an apolitical, non- sectarian, uncontroversial gathering of statistics, yes? Not in Israel. In Israel it is, for many, an instrument of protest. The fifth national census, which got under way in mid-Oc- tober, is being boycotted by tens of thousands to hundreds of thou- sands of Israel's 5.5 million citi- zens. They're boycotting because they don't like the peace process; or because they object to homo- sexual couples; or because they think the census is offensive to Judaism; or because they don't recognize the Jewish State. Some 7,000 census takers are hitting the sidewalks, handing out questionnaires to Israeli households. Respondents are asked the basics: age, sex, coun- try of origin, education, income, occupation and the like. The pur- pose of the census, the first since 1983, is to aid planners and be- cause it's good to know this stuff. In response, right-wing ac- tivists are placing 400,000 flyers in mailboxes, saying that the cen- sus boycott is a way "to express opposition [to the peace process] without violence and without get- ting trampled under the hooves of police horses [at demonstra- tions.]." The flyer urges residents to fill in the questionnaires, but not to hand them in "until a govern- ment is elected which will rule without PLO [Arab party] votes in the Knesset." Census takers will collect the forms beginning early next month. The penalty for refusal to complete or return the questionnaire is three months in prison. But Nurit Rosen, head of public relations for the census, said, "This law has never been enforced before, and I don't be- lieve it will be enforced now." The right-wing boycott is or- ganized by five non-parliamen- tary groups including the YESHA (Judea, Samaria and Gaza) Council, Zo Artzenu (This Is Our Land) and Professors for A Strong Israel. Weizmann Institute Prof. Eli Pollak, a member of Pro- fessors for A Strong Israel and a driving force behind the boycott, said it is the right's latest act of civil disobedience. "We do not re- spect the law of this government, and, therefore, we are not taking part in this census," he said. Right-wing Knesset parties are staying out of the campaign. Building support for the boycott is difficult, Pollak noted, because newspapers will not accept ad- vertisements that call on citizens
