Tourists looking from oceanside tranquility, a sense of remote de- tachment from the world and un- complicated communion with the sea will find the Stuart beach a serendipitous experience. There is one small kicker at the Stuart beach. Condominium own- ers, in their desire to preserve their untouched resource, have refused to permit any markers, signs or written indications of where one is while navigating the soft, sandy terrain. Since the beach is about 15 years below the brush and road surface behind it, one has to use an internal gyroscope to return to one's starting point. That is certainly no problem at Florida's largest and most pop- ular beach — the spectacular panorama of Miami Beach. Al- though in recent years natural erosion has erased almost one half of the 100 years wide beach in some areas, the remaining ex- panse is more than enough for the thousands of people who pop- ulate the shoreline from sunrise to sunset and beyond. Part of the allure of the beach is the magnificent wood board- walk which the city fathers erect- ed in the early 1970s. Ten feet in width and almost three miles long, the boardwalk begins just before the majestic Doral Hotel and extends Southwards down to 22nd St. The foot traffic on the boardwalk is so heavy that city workers are constantly replacing the worn out floor planks. There is no need to replace the sand on Miami Beach but it does have to be landscaped, ploughed, swept, cleaned and packed on a daily basis. Work crews start each day at sunrise to prepare the beach area for the tens of thousands of people who use it as a jogging path, picnic area, bathing facility, high fashion model shotting venue (four sep- arate photography teams were on the beach on a recent after- noon) badminton and volleyball court, skywriting backdrop, surf- ing roller coaster and fishing site. ❑ Yiddish Tam On A Cruise The Workmen's Circle/Arbeter Ring's travel program will hold a nine-day Panama Canal cruise, Sunday, Dec. 3-11, aboard the Royal Odyssey.
