Mr. Loren, Niagara, Jim Shaw
and Mike Kelley.
The four art students prided
themselves on being an anti-rock
band that emphasized "perfor-
mance."
Mr. Loren, who owns Book
Beat along with his wife, Colleen
Kammer, has also published sev-
eral art catalogues and photog-
raphy books. He was drawn to
Mr. Gross' work because of his
ability to "show the best side of
his subjects."
The photography of the former
Oak Park High grad reveals a
talent for perspective and an ap-
preciation for "the decisive mo-
ment." In particular, several of
Mr. Gross' photos capture a ritu-
alistic quality between the Zhous.
And his photos taken while in In-
dia hold a timeless innocence and
mystery.
"A photo is a millisecond in the
life of your subject," said Mr.
Gross. "Sometimes I don't know
what I have until I look at the
negatives."
But clearly, Mr. Gross' work
shows an ability to transform ges-
ture and symbol into photo-
graphic art. The stark black and
white contrast combined with the
intense emotion of the Zhou
brothers represents a compelling
series of portraiture. Indeed, even
the highly critical Zhou brothers
noted the excellence, eventually
referring to Mr. Gross as "Shing
Foo" — the master.
"The prints fit between your
eyes, like a page in a book," said
Mr. Loren. Ironically, employing
the blurred, ghost-like effect gives
Mr. Gross' work the distinctive
transcendental quality reflected
in the Zhou brothers' paintings.
"He uses the camera as a
paintbrush," said Mr. Loren.
Indeed, the photos capture a
dream dialogue of the mystery of
artistic collaboration as well as
the intense concentration of two
of China's most renowned artists.
In the late 1960s and in the
1970s, the Zhous were the most
celebrated contemporary painters
in mainland China. Just before
leaving China in 1985, the Zhous'
work was shown in the National
Museum of Art in Beijing as well
as art museums in Shanghai and
Nanjing.
Mr. Gross' work has seeming-
ly completed the Zhou brothers'
immigration to the Western art
world. His access to their cav-
ernous studio has captured the
process of art, from painting to
reflection.
"Every time I look at the nega-
tives, I'm amazed," said Mr. Gross.
"It's still a miracle to me." El
